High Level Trigger System for the LHC ALICE Experiment
نویسندگان
چکیده
The central detectors of the ALICE experiment at LHC will produce a data size of up to 75 MB=event at an event rate p200 Hz resulting in a data rate of B15 GB=s: Online processing of the data is necessary in order to select interesting (sub)events (‘‘High Level Trigger’’), or to compress data efficiently by modeling techniques. Processing this data requires a massive parallel computing system (High Level Trigger System). The system will consist of a farm of clustered SMP-nodes based on off-the-shelf PCs connected with a high bandwidth low latency network. r 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The ALICE High-Level Trigger
The ALICE experiment at the LHC is dedicated to the investigation of reactions between ultra relativistic heavy ions. With an expected event rate of about 200 Hz in Pb-Pb collisions the data rate of the TPC alone is approximately 15 Gbyte/s, in contrast with a maximum affordable rate to the permanent storage system of 1.25 Gbyte/s. Therefore, a high-level trigger is needed which allows for the ...
متن کاملImplementation of the ALICE TRD into the High-Level-Trigger
The ALICE High Level Trigger is a high performance computer cluster which provides the possibility of an online analysis of detector data from the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. With this online analysis it is possible to distinguish rare and interesting physics scenarios from frequently occurring and well known events. It also enables the various subdetector systems to perform online calibr...
متن کاملThe ALICE muon trigger system: cosmic ray commissioning and first beam-induced events
The ALICE experiment is designed to study strongly interacting nuclear matter which will be produced in heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment is equipped with a trigger system based on resistive plate chambers. A commissioning phase was started in 2008 with the detection of cosmic rays and induced particles of the first beam injec...

Its performance has immediate influence on other reconstruction tasks such as calibration, alignment and par...
متن کاملCalibration of the Prompt L0 Trigger of the Silicon Pixel Detector for the ALICE Experiment
The ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector (SPD) is the innermost detector of the ALICE experiment at LHC. It includes 1200 front-end chips, with a total of ~10 pixel channels. The pixel size is 50 x 425 μm. Each front-end chip transmits a Fast-OR signal upon registration of at least one hit in its pixel matrix. The signals are extracted every 100 ns and processed by the Pixel Trigger (PIT) system, to ge...
